Kibbles-n-Vicks
Michael Vick is in court for his role in a dog fighting ring. As many as eight dogs were killed by Vick and his cohorts, by methods including hanging and drowning. There is a less talked about but even more popular and socially acceptable activity that kills scores of animals called hunting. This recreational sport, in which animals are executed by methods including shooting a gun, is practiced by countless athletes. But because their prey of choice is not man's best friend society has little or no reaction to the execution of these defenseless animals. There is no outcry when a deer is killed and then hung in somebody's living room. Maybe Vick's defense should be that he just wanted to display the dogs' heads above his fireplace.
Honestly, I don't get either activity. I was raised in NY with no pets and no guns so I have little inclination to play with a dog, much less kill one. Nor do I feel an urge to sneak up on an unsuspecting animal in the forest and shoot it. But I realize that I'm a city kid and there are certain aspects of country life that I'll just never understand. Hell, our vice president shot his friend in the face and got an apology from the guy he shot.
I'm not condoning dog fighting or even condemning hunting. Either one would probably make me sick to my stomach if I witnessed it. I'm merely pointing out an inconsistency in America's reaction to animal killing. Bottom line, at the very least I think Vick owes vice president Cheney an apology.
