What Is It Good For
We're at war, people; and by "we" I mean "other people". It alternately infuriates and astonishes me that we are living in "war time" and it couldn't be less apparent or significant in the day to day goings on here in America. Were it not for the occasional "Support the Troops" magnet on the back of a car I might not even know America is right now fighting not one, but two wars simultaneously. "Support the Troops" has morphed into "Forget about the wars and get on with your lives as usual".
If there's one thing the Bush/Cheney administration bet on it was the apathy of the American people, and that bet has paid off handsomely. Of course people care, but not enough to do anything significant about it. WW II is getting more television coverage than our current wars, thanks to Ken Burns's documentary on PBS.
My exasperation with this administration has gotten to the point of near-numbness. How many lies, scandals, high crimes and misdemeanors can be exposed before Bush is held accountable? Blackwater is just the latest in a long line; a loyal Bushie, Prince, making millions off of Bush's war while operating outside of the rules and suffering little consequence.
America's reputation is in tatters around the globe, getting worse every day. What was once a proud record with regards to human rights is now despicable. It boggles my mind to think back to 9/11 and the opportunity it presented, since squandered miserably. An opportunity to rally the world community around the cause of justice and peace, to deliberate and plot a course based on the common good. Instead we got rash, impetuous decisions based on lies and, as a result, a diminished democracy.
I'm not a politician. I don't know a lot about the ways of global politics but I don't ascribe to the "you can't handle the truth" school of governing. I can handle the truth, I just wish we got more of it. I have a feeling truth will be in short supply until January of 2009. Until then, I hold my breath and support the troops.
